The Basics
What Does It Mean to Refinance a Car Loan?
Refinancing a car loan is simpler than most people think. You are basically swapping out your old loan for a new one, with a new lender, a new interest rate, and hopefully better terms. Your new lender pays off what you owe to your old lender, and then you start making payments on your new loan.
The most common reason people refinance is to get a lower interest rate, which can lower your monthly payment and reduce how much you pay in total. But sometimes people refinance to adjust the length of the loan, either to pay it off faster or to give themselves some breathing room with smaller payments.
The whole process usually takes less time than buying a car. There is no dealership visit required, no test drives, and no long negotiations. It is just paperwork and a new loan agreement.
